You will find her sassy light switch covers at both Make It Edmonton and Vancouver.
1. What inspired you to start vintage love?

As a child I used to make collages from magazine images. I loved
collecting the ads and cutting up the pictures. When I was a young adult,
I came across a wooden apple crate filled with vintage magazines at a flea
market. I just wanted the crate and figured I would discard the magazines
after I flipped through them. What I discovered within those pages was
visual gold to me! I began to make collages again and eventually started
using light switch plates as a template.

2. Did you always dream of staring your own business?
Not really – my father owned a delicatessen when I was growing up and
we didn’t really see him often, until we started working for him. I
realized how much time and energy goes into owning a business and was not
sure it was for me. I went to art school instead and graduated from the
Sculpture/Installation program at OCAD. My business began soon after, as
an evolution of my art making.

3. Why light switch plates?
A friend of mine suggested that I print the images I was collecting and
glue them onto light switch plates. At first I resisted, preferring the
immediacy of collage making. Then I came across a page I had saved from
years earlier with instructions on how to decoupage light switch plates. I
made some samples, displayed them at a friend’s art gallery, sold a few
and the rest is history! That was exactly 10 years ago.

4. Have you always loved retro and vintage?
Yes!!! My parents were older and my mom was a 50s housewife. Growing up,
we had many vintage objects in the house and so this was the aesthetic
that I was familiar with and it makes me feel at home. I’m a sucker for
nostalgia!

5. What is the best part about owning vintagelove?
I absolutely love creating things with my hands. I also love making my
own hours and being my own boss. The bonus is seeing the smiles when
people view my work :)

6. What is your favourite thing about Make It?
You guys! I’ve done so many shows over the last decade and I really
appreciate the amount of energy and work you both put into making the Make
It events such a success. I also love the quality of work of all the
designers and the overall vibe.

Patrick Markle – The very talented artist from Fernie BC is the designer of the week!

What will you be selling at Make It Vancouver & Edmonton?

I will be selling digital prints and original original acrylic landscape paintings which focus on life in the mountains.

How did you get started?

After fininshing my HBFA at Lakehead University I moved out west to experience life as a ski bum and I got hooked.  When I moved to Fernie BC I began painting the surrounding mountains and doing small shows in town.  Since then my work has evolved and become more refined and I now tour BC and Alberta showing my work to anyone interested.


Your style is unique and recognizable (which is a very good thing!) What inspires you?

I have definatly developed my own style.  I like to think of it as Canadian post impresionist combined with Japanese wood block printer.  My inspiration comes from experiences in nature.  I do a lot of backcountry touring in the winter and a lot of camping and canoeing in the summer.  I always have my camera with me and I work from photos when I get back to my studio.  Most simply I am inspired by mountains, water and dramatic light.

Do you think buying local & handmade is a growing trend Canada?

I don’t know if hand made is a growing trend.  I think it has always been a big part of Canadian culture steaming from the days of the pioneers.  We have always had a big community of folk arts and crafts people, maybe because of our long winters people need something to do on those cold nights.  I think the hand made revolution is becomming much more important as consumer culture keeps canadians focused on bargan bin pricing without thinking about how and where things are made and who is making money off them.  In a world of globalisation I think its time to start thinking and buying localy.

Is it true when you’re not painting you’re also a male model?

Its true, I have had some down and out moments where art just wasn’t paying the bills.  The last time I experiences such hardship I was discovered on Whyte Ave in Edmonton by the head designer and CEO of Ole Originals.  He said he really liked my look and dubbed it the half drowned sewer rat.  He pulled me out of the gutter took some photos and paied me in T-shirts.  As you can imaging my head was a spin from the glamorise excitement of the day and just as quickly as it had started ….it was over.  I turned around and he was gone.  I was alone sporting some fresh new duds looking confused but sexy!  I often wonder if my short lived modeling career was just a dream but as soon as I step into my closet, I see my Ole Originl “Rock Star” t-shirt and I know that moment in the fassion industry was real and somehow the best time of my life.

What inspired you to start Cinder & Sage?
I’ve always had a love of anything old and rustic. When it came to jewelry, I felt like there wasn’t a huge selection that fit my vintage taste. I wanted to wear unique pieces that would start a conversation or catch a stranger’s eye. So, since I’ve always been a crafty DIYer at heart, I started to make my own jewelry by taking pieces apart and recreating them. Very quickly, my friends and family started asking me to make them some and it all snowballed from there.  It was encouraging to hear other people’s excitement about what I was creating and I was happy that people shared my taste!
Has running a business been something you have wanted to do for a long time?
Yes it has! I grew up with 2 older brothers who each have their own businesses, so they inspired me at a young age to someday run my own as well. I admired the independence and satisfaction they were able to get by building their companies, and I wanted the same for myself. While I was studying business in university, I worked for both of them and was able to learn so much about how to build, run and manage a successful business.

How do you differentiate yourself from other jewelry designers?
I think that the fact that many of my pieces are customizable really sets me apart from other designers. Customers love that they can order a locket with the definition of a meaningful word or have a small airplane covered with a map showing the tiny town in Italy where their grandmother was born. It adds that personal touch that they can’t get just anywhere. Also I think the way it is all presented, from the rustic, earthy display at the markets to the packaging, really helps differentiates Cinder & Sage from others.
Is it hard to sell some of your favourite one of a kind pieces?
It definitely is! There are so many times that I’ve made a one of a kind piece that I’ve fallen in love with. I will usually wear it at a market and end up selling it right off of my neck once a customer notices it. It’s hard to see them go, knowing that it’s a one of a kind, but seeing how happy the customer is with it makes it okay.

What is your favourite part about selling at Make It?
I love the atmosphere at Make It. The music is great and the shoppers are always so excited to be there.  I also love meeting and interacting with the other artists and designers. It’s really amazing to be surrounded by so many talented people. Make It always just pulses with creative energy… I love it.

Any advice for aspiring jewelry designers?
I would say to find your niche and be unique. There is so much jewelry out there, so if you want to get noticed and be remembered, you’ve got to create something different that people will connect with. It’s all about sticking out in customers’ minds so that they recommend you to others and keep coming back to you for more pieces in the future. When customers start building a collection of your pieces and when they are able to recognize your work on strangers, you’ll know you’re doing something very right.

We were absolutely thrilled to have sold out the Vancouver show in record time! Luckily they have a second room we can use because there has been a steady stream of applications arriving daily. For Edmonton we have a few spaces that haven’t been spoken for but we know they will be gone soon so you best get on it!
What differentiates Make It from other craft show you ask? Well, besides being super fun, awesome, exciting, vibrant, funky, hip, urban…etc, etc, etc…we actually care. A LOT!!! My brother Chandler and I run everything from our Gastown office in Vancouver and are involved in every single aspect of the show. Over the years Make It has become like a family. We know everyone by name and many of the exhibitors have become good friends. Chandler and I want to make a difference in the community and create an event that provides a platform for creative entrepreneurs.
Summer is over (although you wouldn’t know it by looking out the window…not complaining!) and it is the perfect time to plan for the busy and lucrative holiday season. We promise Make It will be an amazing selling experience and you will meet some incredible people and learn a ton.
