How did you get started?

I have been creating artwork from metal and other materials since my childhood. My dad is a skilled tradesman in a variety of trades. His quality craftsmanship, expertise and attention to detail are what I apply to my work today. I also have a science background from the University of Alberta which has really played into my love of the earth and its elements. My studies in Chemistry really helped when it came to advancing my knowledge in chemical processes behind metalsmithing. Also, my minor in classics has given me a broader spectrum of historic influences. My family helped me out with equipment costs and my dads in-depth knowledge of machinery helped a great deal in creating my own tools and customizing my equipment. Presently, I am working towards my gemologist accreditation through the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). Instead of furthering my science career I decided, based on the great response my artwork and the high number of special requests I was receiving, to concentrate on my artwork. At this time my fiancé Tanner became more involved in not only the business aspects but also helping with the basis of the creation processes, as well as developing some of his own products from start to finish.  We have also taken training throughout North American on specialized techniques. Another thing which has helped me out is Tanner’s background in business, also through the U of A, and in various mediums of art.

What was your original inspiration for Paragon of Design by Skrocki?

From the elements of the earth which I use in my work (metal, leather, stone and minerals, etc), to the motifs and styles immortalized throughout the centuries in artwork spanning the globe I draw my influences, and my name, from those designs which I feel are the true paragons of design. Further, Paragon of Design by Skrocki came from a strong desire to create as many as possible of our own wholly original pieces including the fabrication of our own metal and leather components. Another great inspiration to my work is my love of travelling to exotic destinations.

You were at the Golden Globes earlier this year. What was that experience like?

We had a great time and an even better response to our artwork from the Celebrities. The great variety of different types of celebrities that were present could be anyone from: TV celebrities, to movie stars, to sports stars, musicians, writers, producers etc coming through. I had also made a large one-of-a-kind piece of art, collected the signature of everyone who stopped by and at the end of the event donated the piece to be auctioned off for charity.

How has having celebrity fans changed your business?

The event helped us to generate a much broader spectrum for both our customer and our fan base. We have been continually receiving correspondences from the stars thanking us and, in some cases extending invitations to come hang out in L.A., to people sending in candid and professional photos of stars wearing our pieces to events. Business wise this event really helped us to break into new markets.

Why do you exhibit at Make It?

Make It is one of our favourite events to vend at because it is such a breath of fresh air into the sometimes stagnant art / craft show circuit. Jenna and Chandler bring enthusiasm and confidence to each of their events which spreads throughout the vendors and the customers creating an overall enjoyable experience for everyone in attendance.

What is your favorite thing to buy at the show?

My favourite thing to buy at the show is anything really finely crafted that has been made with a lot of care. During the Edmonton Christmas show I was able to buy a number of really unique and very well done pieces which included: a beautiful handmade jacket, a gorgeous handmade purse and a cool Metavore from Crystal Cradle.

Do you have any words of advice for new designers?

Getting started is very difficult. If you want to be a full time artisan make sure you price out your work to accurately reflect what you know its worth. Be sure to take into account all of your business expenses, such as vending, show insurance and traveling fees, involved in getting your products to their final destinations. Also, remember every successful artisan needs to tap into a business resource of some sort whether it’s a family member, friend, or even through your own studies. Having this resource will help with promotion, applications to shows, promotional materials (such as business cards or websites) so you can stay focused on your design work!
