the new girl

Saturday, March 27th, 2010

We have a new girl at the Make It office who is a fashion following, music loving, hempseed eating, social media whiz (in training!) She has already had to break up some sibling quarrels but being a middle child herself she knows how to handle herself pretty well. Introducing the fabulous Léa Kiefer! Tell us a little bit about yourself? I’m Léa and I have big ’small town heart’ coming from Saskatchewan. I think our world is the best thing ever and love learning more and more about it each day. My curiosity paired with my abundance of energy usually gets the best of me but I’ve lived 20-some years in the making. I’m obsessed with fashion, art, food, and love a good conversation! Why fashion school? It’s an interesting art form as well as a fun, open way of expressing yourself. I love waking up in the morning and being able to think and decide how I want to dress and be addressed (by others) that day. It’s like telling a new story about yourself each day:) What kinds of things are you into? I’m into life, laughing, loving, exploring…. anything new, exciting and random. I love people, music, travelling, and pulling myself out of my comfort zone, oh and learning. Learning is good. Why did you want to be the Make It intern? Markets are fabulous…let alone, booze and music?!?! How would I not want to be the intern? Make It seemed like a fun event to support and be involved with – Canadian designers, and hand-made goodness seem pretty good to me. What do you like to make or want to make? I’m thinking about making some sort of candle sculpture. One that evolves or melts over time. I want it to be partially directed but also naturally melt in its own form. Sound cool? What do you want to be when you grow up? When I grow up, I want to be a crazy old lady who lives in a purple house with a yellow door. This way I can do, say and be whatever and whoever I want. What are Chandler and Jenna like to work with? Well they always bicker back and forth, which kinda gets annoying. I mean…they’re great of course! It’s like a day at the park, but with laptops involved, oh and instead of throwing rocks, Jenna and I poke fun at Chandler. It’s a blast! One thing you want to accomplish in your life? Soon? Being on a boat, and relaxing, and taking advantage of my new city! Later? I always thought it be neat to teach piano lessons to people, that would work well with my purple house right? Your most recent music addition to your playlist? I’ve been checking out Yo La Tengo lately which I really like. The new Gorillaz album is kinda neat too! If you could fly anywhere, where would you go? I would go to Santiago! I think Chile would be fun, somewhat cheap, and allow for lots of room for learning a completely different culture than my own. Must I mention the wine?!

Be proud, buy Canadian!

Monday, March 8th, 2010
Wow, spring has defiantly sprung in Vancouver! The sun has been shinning, the birds have been chirping and lovely cherry blossoms are everywhere! After 17 days of a spectacular Olympic experience it is great to look forward to warmer weather and exciting events like Make It Vancouver and Edmonton. Chandler and I felt so fortunate to witness the magic of the Olympics and were inspired by the patriotism, openness and energy! One message in particular that stood out to me was “The World needs more Canada.” We are so incredibly lucky to live in this amazing country and it seemed like until the Olympics we didn’t always realize it.

I think now more than ever shoppers will appreciate and value products handmade in Canada. This is great news for all the amazing designers and artisans who are part of the Make It family and are the driving force behind our Handmade Revolution! Becoming more patriotic feels good because it unites us and allows us to join a collective movement. Be proud, buy Canadian!
